Or broadly, Biomimetics or Biomimicry is the process of looking at nature for answers to problems throughout our existence. Man has discovered that it has answers to engineering problems such as systems, structures, self-healing abilities, environmental exposure tolerance and resistance, self-assembly, and harnessing solar energy, etc.

The terms are derived from Ancient Greek: βίος (bios), life, and μίμησις (mīmēsis), imitation, from μιμεῖσθαι (mīmeisthai), to imitate, from μῖμος (mimos), actor.

Biomaterials are any natural or synthetic material that interacts with any part of a biological system. Biomimetic designs could be used in regenerative medicine, tissue engineering and drug delivery.
